| SEDUCED - Art & Sex from Antiquity to Now Seduced is the first major study of the visual representation of sex and changing attitudes towards explicit imagery throughout history. Featuring such diverse works as Roman marbles, Japanese woodcuts, Indian manuscripts, Renaissance and baroque paintings, nineteenth century photographs and contemporary videos, this fascinating book reveals how art with a sexual content has been collected, openly displayed, concealed or prohibited over time. Including works spanning 2000 years by over 70 artists including Rembrandt, Kitagawa, Pablo, Picasso, Francis Bacon, Andy Warhol, Robert Mapplethorpe and Jeff Koon, this book works to provoke us and questions the lines drawn between art and pornography, and to examine our boundaries of acceptability and censorship |

| Sex has been represented in art for thousands of years:
explicit images of hetrosexual and homosexual sex were commonplace in Ancient
Greece, and early Indian manuscripts and Japanese woodcuts frequently depicted
erotic illustrations. Society has not always been so tolerant of such imagery
however, and at times it has been concealed or even banned, depending upon the
sensibilities of the time. SEDUCED: ART AND SEX FROM ANTIQUITY TO NOW takes a fascinating look at changing attitudes to art with a sexual content. It features works spanning 2000 years, placing them within their historical and cultural context. This ambitious book includes unseen pieces from private collections, as well as works by such artists as Rembrandt, J.M.W Turner (who made erotic sketches in his private notebooks) and Egon Schiele. Renaissance and Baroque paintings, nineteenth-century photographs and contemporary video stills are reproduced alongside work by Picasso, Robert Mapplethorpe and Jeff Koons. Each work in turn challenges the viewer to assess and reassess the distinction between art and pornography, and to confront personal and public boundaries between acceptability and censorship. More than 70 artists are featured in this thought-provoking and beautifully produced book. SEDUCED: ART AND SEX FROM ANTIQUITY TO NOW is published in association with the Barbican Art Gallery, London, to coincide with the opening of an exhibition of the same name which runs at the gallery from 12 October 2007 until 27 January 2008. The exhibition has been curated by three leading scholars and provides a powerful sensory experience that highlights the intensely personal relationship between viewer and artwork. Marina Wallace is a professor at Central St Martins College of Art and Design at the University of the Arts London. Martin Kemp is Professor of the History of Art at the University of Oxford. Joanne Bernstein is an independent curator. |
